Author Jerry Spinelli remembers being at the grocery store one night when he was still working his day job and writing his books at night and having to choose between cough syrup for one child and milk for the other. No one ever told him how difficult it would be to make a living as a writer, but he says with determination and a lot of luck he has been able to do just that.
