Author Donna Barba Higuera remembers as a kid growing up in a very homogeneous small town being discouraged in many instances from embracing everything about who she was racially and culturally. Almost as a wish to go back in time to embrace and encourage her young girl self, she now writes books that feature biracial and/or bicultural characters.
