A realistic novel set in the future, the seemingly idyllic world in which the 12-year-old main character lives turns out to have a terrible underbelly in which bad things do happen. The book won rave reviews—and the prestigious prize—but it also frightened many people, landing and still residing on a list of most challenging books for children.
