Author Kwame Alexander's Visual Poetry in "The Crossover"

Author Kwame Alexander’s says that the subject matter of each poem in his book The Crossover dictated the form. For example, the mother of one character is always sending him text messages, so mirroring those short messages, the author used haiku to tell the story. In others, with conversations—give and take—between characters, he uses couplets and terse verse. He aimed to have the poems look like they’d be read or heard.
