“If you got rid of all the books people complained about, there would be no good books to read.” So say Author Judy Blume as she discusses the perils of banning books … ironically, more time than not the books kids like and want to read. After the presidential election of 1980, censors seemed to come out of the woodwork, banning books in school libraries that addressed topics like puberty and menstruation (think: Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret). Though there are now policies and organizations to defend authors, publishers, and librarians against censorship, people still attempt to keep certain books from their children—and each other—out of what seems like simple fear.
