Dragons
Christopher Paolini, author of the mega-popular fantasy books Eragon and Eldest, recently announced that he had two more books to come in the series. While fans are excited about more to come, they also need more like this to read now. Try some of these books about the exciting mythical creatures.
Here There be Dragons
Age Level: 9-12
Yolen wrote all of these varied entries about the delightful dragon, and relates the poems, and short stories from a variety of genres, complete with a background as to their inspiration.
Enchanted Forest Chronicles
Age Level: 9-12
A four-book series featuring reluctant princess Cimorene, warring factions of dragons and wizards, and tons of humor.
Dragonriders of Pern trilogy
Age Level: 14-16
The Pern series is arguably the most famous collection of dragon tales. This version collects the initial trilogy of humans and their flying companions set in a beautifully realized magical world.
Dragon Slippers
Age Level: 12-14
This unique dragon tale features strong heroine Creel, who is allowed to choose a pair of slippers from a dragon’s hoard. The slippers she chooses have an unusual power, and Creel must be careful to not let them fall into the wrong hands (or feet!)
Dragon Rider
Age Level: 12-14
German author Funke became known in the US with The Thief Lord and Inkheart, but this is my favorite of her titles translated for us. There is a heroic dragon and his boy sidekick, fighting Nettlebrand, the man-made dragon and his spy, Twigleg. Despite its length (it’s over 500 pages) this story is a fast-paced adventure.
Dragonology
Age Level: 9-12
This was the first published in the popular "ologies" series, now also featuring Wizardology, Pirateology and Egyptology among others. Written as if it were a study guide to dragon knowledge, the book is highly attractive to reluctant readers, with its many foldouts and three-dimensional illustrations.
Hatching Magic
Age Level: 9-12
When Wycca, a dragon living in the 13th century, stumbles through a gateway to the future, she lands in present day Boston, followed shortly thereafter by the wizards looking for her. What can 11-year old Theodora do and how did she get mixed up in this anyway?
Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher
Age Level: 9-12
Younger readers will enjoy this dragon fantasy set in the present day. While running away from his unwanted crush Mary Lou, Jeremy discovers a magic shop where he purchases an egg. When dragon Tiamat hatches, the adventure begins, and so do Jeremy's responsibilities toward the growing dragon. A perfect introduction to fantasy.
Ralph Masiello's Dragon Drawing Book
Age Level: 9-12
Dragons are beautiful, powerful creatures that have immense appeal to the budding artist. This book not only gives drawing advice but also background information on a wide variety of dragons.
