Middle and high school students are frequently assigned biographies to read, but biographies can also be popular leisure reading choices for adolescents, as they often feature individuals who have overcome adversity.

Nic Sheff was drunk for the first time at age 11. In the years that followed, he would smoke pot, do cocaine and Ecstasy, and develop addictions to crystal meth and heroin. Cures for a Heatbreak & Grief Girl (Memoir vs. Fiction)

For Ages: 14-16

Cures for Heartbreak is a fictional account of a 15-year old girl whose mother dies just days after being diagnosed with melanoma; Grief Girl is a memoir about a 14-year old girl whose parents are killed in a car accident. These books provide an excellent opportunity for both students to discuss the distinctions between fiction and memoir.
