Building Reading Confidence in Adolescents

The authors present a unique framework of research-based strategies for building reading self-efficacy by focusing on four important concepts: confidence, independence, metacognition, and stamina.

Performing Arts: Dramarama

Dramarama

Dramarama

Age Level: 12-14

Dramarama references A Midsummer Night's Dream, Cats, Bye Bye Birdie, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, and Grease, as well as many odes to Liza Minelli. E. Lockhart's website has links to video excerpts and even an iMix playlist on iTunes with all the songs from the discussed musicals. Her website is chatty and fun, just like her books, and will easily extend the enjoyment of this book.

Possible discussion questions:

  • Sarah/Sadye finds out that she is not as talented as some other kids at the camp. What is more important in the arts: talent or hard work?
  • Sadye doesn't agree with Morales' methods of teaching acting. Do you agree with Sadye? Or do you agree with Demi?
  • Think of a hobby that you enjoy, and research ways you could turn that hobby into a job that you enjoy, as many characters in Dramarama do in the theater.
  • Were you surprised by what Sarah did to leave Wildewood? What would you have done in that situation?
